How To Market Yourself And Get Hired

Stay at home moms who don't think they have any "job" related attributes that contribute to a stellar resume, think again, you may be more qualified than most applicants applying for the same job. Whether you need to get out in the work force due the economy or returning to the workforce after a long lapse of mother hood duties, there are some skills, titles, and qualifications you may not be aware you execute at this very moment. It is a tough time for everyone who is searching for a job, for each job available there are about 100 applicants, so it is important to create a resume that will stand out and stick in the employer's mind. So the first resume tip to get hired would be to put your self in their shoes, imagine you are sifting through 100's of resumes which all begin to blur into one another, how are you going to stand out? What qualities can you showcase that the other applicants can't?

Job Qualifications/Skills/Titles: Be Creative

You may not realize just how many job qualifications, titles. and skills you juggle as a stay at home mom or a working mom. From managing the daily household chores, budgeting the check book, to squeezing every dime you can out of a dollar, these alone can challenging to anyone, though you stride with ease day in and day out and have a bit of sanity left. So how can you put a title to your daily duties as a mom? The key here is to be creative, employers love this, it means they have to think less for you.

C.F.O - Job Title:

Chief Financial Officer? Me? Yes, think about it, you run the household in this way more than you think. Here are a few ideas: Manage the checkbook, monthly and yearly budget planning, large purchases, oversee all profits of company, being your household. If you can handle working closely with your significant other whom you share a bed with and not rip each others head off, well my fellow sisters this in itself deserves an award.

You are a master at multitasking. There's a load of clothes washer, one in the dryer, dinner is in the oven, snacks for the older kids sitting on the table, and you are potty training the baby, all at the same time. Which brings me to another attribute employers look for, problem solving. The budget is tight, the kids need new shoes, the cost of groceries are rising, your significant other is feeling neglected of your affection, again all at the same time. You are a master for resources that don't require a lot of money or time. As you download the coupons for the groceries, you look for the best deals on line or second hand stores for a pair of shoes your kid won't complain about, take the kids to grandma's for a night out/in with your neglected loved one and remain on budget. Everyone wins. In doing all this you can also add: work well under pressure, because you do.

The last thing to focus on is your creativity and the unique individual you are, and with that you need to show it in your interview. A big part in an interview is self confidence, and the second is to ready yourself for questions you may not know how to answer. This shows you can think quick on your feet, handle organic pressure, and be articulate. Think of your interviewer as you would as your daily interactions with the grocer, a child's teacher, or a bill collector, be personable, firm, and direct to the point. Remember, out of the 100 applicants maybe 10 were selected to have a face to face with the employer, so make it count, you want to leave a lasting impression on the employer.

Objective
What do you offer as a person? Why should the company invest in you? What qualities do you have that will benefit the position/type of company you want to be employed at? Are you looking for seasonal/ part time/ or full time?

Qualifications
This is the area where you would illustrate your savvy skills as a mother/ wife/ psychotherapist to your household. Working well under pressure, multi-tasked, knowledge of crunching numbers, ability to problem solve.

Education
If you don’t want to date yourself in your resume, don’t, just simply list name, location, and degree earned. If you attended some college and did not graduate it is still a good idea to document the name, location, and courses you studied.

Relevant Experience
How many years have you been a wife? A mother? This is your relevant experience, again you can get creative with your title as a stay at home mother/wife and the duties you perform.

Other Experience
Any volunteer work or better yet list some websites your write on, like Hubpages. This in it self is like a reference and another dimension to a resume most applicants fail to do.

Keep It Simple

Like I mentioned, an employer will scan 100's of resumes and will usually skip over wordy, lengthy ones that are more than a page. So it is important you use correct grammar, keep a clean appearance, and offer some creative aspects about yourself. Put yourself in their shoes, how many times can you read the same qualifications, person after person, and not start pushing them aside? It is the unique ones that stand out, this doesn't mean to print your resume on hot pink paper and douse it with your scent, just use some creative words. Chances are good this in it self will grab their attention and score you a face to face, and then you can sell what your words have illustrated.

I am a SAHM and this article is priceless! In another year I will be making my way back to a full time position...with NO experience :( My resume is pathetic and lame. However, I will have to remember this and market myself with what I DO have. Thanks!

Thank you Ardie, stay at home mom's deserve an award for you job is 24/7 year round, you can not expect 2 10 minute breaks and a 30 minute lunch during their "shift". Most moms I know look at work as a break. Best of luck with the future job hunt, don't forget to add online publisher, and a successful one at that when it comes time to write your resume.

Very useful hub. I have been at home with my children for 2 years now after working for several years, and am so tired of hearing the question: "what have you been doing for the last few years?" This article definitely resonated with me. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you chiefmomofficer,

Your name pretty much says it all. Did you tell the inquiring minds that you have been raising our future generation while not driving yourself insane? Motherhood is a full time, always on call job not to mention there are not pay raises.

Excellent tips and ENCOURAGEMENT so mums. I think this is so important as many stay at home mums lose confidence when ging back to the ´´workforce´´ (Anyone who thinks that a stay at home mum doesn´t work is deluded.)

Great hub

Thanks Dim! You are right on that! There is no "10 min" break along with an hour lunch for stay at home moms. Hell there is not even a break when "nature calls"
